Association Executive Services (AES) is a division of Nick Koerbin & Associates Pty Ltd, a nationally focussed advisory firm for the Not for Profit (NFP) and Association sector. AES Director Nick Koerbin had been a CEO of a number of professional and Industry based associations spanning a 25 year period. In 2011 he started AES as an organisation providing services to NFP association senior executives and board members to enable them to lead their organisations to achieve best practice.
Nick’s vision for AES was borne out of his 30 years’ experience as a leader of NFP organisations both large and small.
Nick has witnessed and come to recognise that inconsistent management practices can severely impede the delivery of effective services. In particular membership based associations
play a particular role in our community. They are responsible for social change, professional development and accumulation of knowledge through their members which is passed onto future generations.
Nick witnessed first hand when a professional association collapsed and the impact this had on the status of a profession in the community.
In 1999 after a short period as Victorian State Manager of a national association of professional members, the entire organisation of 13,000 members went into administration. This resulted in all employees being sacked just before Christmas, but more serious was the impact
on the status of the profession throughout Australia. It was this experience and the gradual realisation that similar organisations faced similar management practices, that there was no organisation that could provide a total service, that Nick started AES. AES needed a process to engage association leaders in order to ascertain how they were managing their association.
Nick and his colleagues created the NFP association best practice self-assessment survey to allow leaders of associations to assess their organisation and benchmark themselves with other associations. This is the only benchmarking tool available for the NFP sector in Australia and to date, has been used by over 400 associations. When the association leader highlights the management gaps within their association AES staff can provide a total solution to the association leaders which enables them to grow and reach business excellence.
